Press Release | February 10, 2018
PORTLAND - The Portland Pickles have signed LHP Keaton Knueppel and RHP Colin Suter, two more Gonzaga Bulldogs.
Keaton Knueppel will compete as a sophomore for the Bulldogs in 2018 after playing only two games his freshman year before an injury.
"Keaton projects to be a top LHP in the West Coast Conference in his career at Gonzaga," said Gonzaga Head Coach Machtolf. "He has an outstanding breaking ball that will compliment an above average fastball."
Knueppel was one of the top pitchers in the history of Verona Area High School (Verona, Wisconsin). The two-time All-Conference player set or tied the records for most complete games and wins in a single season. His junior year tallies of a 1.26 ERA and 78 strikeouts were the second-most in a single season at Verona. Also as a junior, Knueppel picked up Academic All-State honors after a strong year on the mound and in the classroom.
Colin Suter spent four years in Bellevue High School's baseball program. As a junior, he posted an 8/3 strikeout/walk ratio, earning him All-League honors. The right-hander also pitched for the Seattle Mariners' Scout Team in the Arizona Fall Classic.
"Colin is a very projectable pitcher who we think has a chance to really flourish when he gets to campus," said Coach Machtolf prior to Suter's freshman year. "He comes from one of the top summer programs in the state, and we think his profile as a student-athlete really fits who we are looking for."
Colin's grandfather, Bill Suter, was a dual-sport athlete at Gonzaga in the 1960's; he played baseball and basketball.
"Gonzaga has become one of the premier programs in the Northwest, and has continuously sent high-quality players to the West Coast League," said Rose City Baseball's Director of Baseball Ops, Gregg Swenson. "With Knueppel and Suter, plus the earlier signings of Copeland and Breshears, we have added four really good Bulldog players for the 2018 summer."
Gonzaga's schedule is set to begin in Surprise, Arizona against Cal Poly on February 16th.
