Pickles take non-leaguer from Gresham, 5-0
Portland, Ore. --
The Pickles bested their sibling squad Gresham Greywolves 5-0 in front of 1407 fans Saturday afternoon at Walker Stadium. The non-league game was the first of two on the day for Portland, who completes the split doubleheader Saturday night with game two of their West Coast League series with the Bend Elks. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
The Pickles scored four of their five runs in the first inning, with Carson Breshears connecting for a lead-off home run to right field. Later in the frame Jordan Mambaje blasted a double to deep center, Zach Busalacchi reached on a fielder's choice and Gake Skoro plated Mambaje with an RBI knock to right-center, making it 2-0. An errant pickoff throw allowed Busalacchi to score, and Skoro raced around the bags to try to and reach third. The ball again got away on the throw to third and Skoro scored the fourth run.
Mikey Perez led off the sixth with a double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 lead.
The game went a shortened seven innings due to the day-night doubleheader, and Portland's pitching was again impressive. Damon Tredwell struck out four in the start, going two innings. Max Jones followed with two scoreless frames and right-hander Jack Dolak debuted for Portland with two scoreless innings of his own. Nick Paciorek had runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, but induced a line out-throw out doubleplay to end the game and keep the shutout intact.
The Pickles improve to 4-0 against Gresham this year. The teams will meet seven more times this season, the next matchup coming Tuesday July 3rd at 1:05pm.
