The Portland Pickles Reporting From Mazatlán, Mexico
MAZATLÁN — The Portland Pickles began their adventure down in Mazatlán, Mexico this week. The Pickles will face off against their sister team — the Mazatlán Venados — in a historical pre-season opener at the Venados’ new 16,000-seat stadium.
It will be the first time an All-Star WCL team will travel down to play a MPL (Mexican Pacific League) team. Both teams’ home cities are excited, not only for this game but for the unity that it brings.
The All-Star team includes fan favorites such as Joey Cooper, Matt Hardy and Alec Leighton. The winner of our “Play with the Pickles” contest Mark Triolo will travel with the team and feature in the game. We even brought along Ron the K man.
This new “Friendship” game will not only be the first of its kind, but it will also be a chance for one lucky player from Mazatlán to come back to Portland and play for the Pickles.
On October 8th, the Venados held tryouts similar to the tryouts the Pickles held back in August. The Venados along with the Pickles chose four out of 100’s who tried out, and those four will play with the Pickles on the 9th against the Venados.
The player from those 4 that impresses coaches and fans the most will be receiving a scholarship to play with the Pickles for the 2020 season.
