Pickles Announce Public Tryout 8/21 - Winner gets to Join Pickles Against Mazatlán Venados

PORTLAND, Ore. (August 15, 2019) —The Portland Pickles need the community's help to finalize their roster when they travel to Mexico this October. The organization is inviting all interested parties to try out next Wednesday August 21st from 6 to 9pm at Walker Stadium. 

The winning player will join Pickles greats Joey Cooper, Zander Clark, Bobby Kinne and Daniel Lopez as they travel to Mexico to play the Mazatlán Venados in front of an expected crowd of 16,000 people for the first ever Friendship Series between the two teams. The date of the game is October 9th, 2019.

In the first wide spread open baseball tryout in Portland since the Mavericks, players will compete in several drills and show off their hitting, pitching, and fielding skills. Pickles coaches and front office will decide who will join the team on the trip down south. 

Earlier this year it was announced The Portland Pickles Baseball Club and the Mazatlán Venados developed the first-ever bi country baseball city partner program. The purpose of creating this partnership is to open up new lines of communication, learning, and inspiration between two baseball teams operating in border countries.

What to bring: Participants are encouraged to bring a glove and water at minimum

Winning participant will receive: 

  • 1 Round-trip flight from PDX to Mazatlan

  • Round-trip shuttle from airport to hotel

  • Shared Hotel room at The Royal Villas- https://www.royalvillas.com.mx 

  • Play in the game at Estadio Teodoro Mariscal with The Pickles against the Mazatlán Venados on Oct. 9th 2019

  • On October 8th (in conjunction with the Venados help) players will participate in a "try out" on Tuesday morning, So the community in Mazatlán can experience first hand what Venados-WCL relationship is developing.

EVERYONE AND ANYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO TRYOUT, BUT WINNER MUST HAVE VALID PASSPORT OR IDENTIFICATION TO TRAVEL TO AND FROM MEXICO

About the Portland Pickles: The Portland Pickles is a collegiate wood-bat baseball team founded in 2015 and based in Portland, Oregon. The team is a member of the West Coast League and play home games at Walker Stadium in Portland's Lents Park.  The Pickles are all about FUN and are recognized for presenting the best entertainment package in the Portland area. Out west, the league features an unparalleled history of memorable fan and player experiences and the best summer weather in North America. 83 players with WCL experience were selected in the MLB 2017 June draft. 270 WCL alums appeared or were active in affiliated professional baseball in 2017 including 31 in the major leagues, such as 2015 home-run leader Chris Davis (Baltimore); record-breaking slugger Rhys Hoskins (Philadelphia); rising star pitchers James Paxton (Seattle) and Matt Boyd (Detroit); and outfielder Mitch Haniger (Seattle). Overall member attendance was 412,392 this past summer, an increase of 8.6% in total attendance.

About the Mazatlán Venados : Venados de Mazatlán (English: Mazatlán Deer) are a baseball team in the Mexican Pacific League. In 2016 the team won the Mexican Pacific League Championship and went on to win their second Caribbean Series. Their Stadium, Estadio Teodoro Mariscal was constructed in 1962 with a capacity of 14,000 and is primarily used for baseball. It is 325 feet down the stadium's right and left field lines and 400 feet to the center field wall. The stadium is located in between Avenida Insurgentes and Reforma near Bosque de la Ciudad and The Aquarium.
