Wojahn To Compete In WCL Home Run Derby

The WCL All Star Break is here and that also means it is time for the home run derby. Each team in the WCL gets one representative from their team to compete. This year the Portland Pickles representative will be Connor Wojahn from Clark College. Wojahn sees the majority of his time this summer at 1st base and in the designated hitter role and is hitting .136 in WCL play, but in some non-league action is hitting .333 where he also has a home run and a handful of RBI’s. The participants will each get 10 outs. Any ball made contact with and that does not end up as a home run is considered an out. Batters will alternate between players representing the North Division and South Division. The players with the most home runs from each the North and South will advance to face each other in the final round.

The 2019 West Coast League All-Star Game Home Run Derby is set for Monday, July 22nd at Vince Genna Stadium in Bend, scheduled for 6:35 pm.

Pickles Win Absolute Thriller To Sweep The Bells

The Pickles win streak will once again live to see another day, and on this night it continued in dramatic fashion. In what can only be defined as a slugfest of a baseball game that saw 26 total runs, and four different lead changes. The biggest of those lead changes came in a 5 run bottom of the 8th. Pickles entered the inning trailing by a score of 12-9, an Alex Lambeau RBI single cut the lead to 12-10, followed by an RBI single by John Jensen to make it 12-11. Game Skoro was able to beat out a double play ball to tie the game at 12 and set the table for Kyle Manzardo. Manzardo lined a two strike pitch to RF to knock in two runs and give the Pickles their final lead at 14-12. Pickles had a big offensive night, led by Kyle Manzardo who was 2-4 with 4 RBI, and John Jensen who was 2-3 with two RBI of his own. Pickles will hit the road for a weekend series up the road in Ridgefield starting tomorrow.

Pickles Bats Explode To Win Series Over Yakima

The Pickles had scored a total of two runs in the first two games of their series with the Yakima Valley Pippins but the script was flipped in the final game. The Pickles set season highs in runs scored and hits in an 11-4 win, which led to a series victory as well. Seven of the ten Pickles who came to the plate in this game drove in a run, highlighted by a three run home run by Everett Lau in the bottom of the 4th inning. It was a team effort all around as every eligible Pickle batter tallied at least one hit in this game. The starter Michael Perzan got the win on the mound and Gabe Skoro led the way with three hits on the night. Pickles will take Monday night off before jumping into a stretch of non-league games Tuesday night at 7:05.

Portland Rallies To Win Extra Innings Thriller

It was deja vu all over again leading into the 9th inning, a pitchers duel that had resulted in a 1-0 Yakima Valley lead. Two teammates at Cal St. Fullerton starting pitchers were going toe to toe on the mound as Titus Groeneweg surrendered just three hits and an unearned run over six innings, while his teammate and college roommate Joe Magrisi surrendered one hit and no runs along with 12 strikeouts. The bats remained quiet for the Pickles until Chase Luttrell promptly deposited a ball over the left field fence to leadoff the inning and tie the game. Joey Morris hung a up a huge zero in the top of the 10th, which set the stage for a Pickles victory. Jonathan Kelly led off the bottom of the 10th with a line drive double to left, and instead of playing small ball the Pickles opted to let John Arndorfer swing the bat. That would end up paying huge dividends as Arndorfer shot a rocket down the third base line to score the winning run. Arndorfer also led the way with two hits on the night. Pickles will be back in action for the rubber game of this series tomorrow night, first pitch at 5:05.

Pickles Drop Pitching Duel In Game One

Pitching, pitching, and more pitching was the story in this one as a lone run in the top of the 8th inning led to the 1-0 win for the Yakima Valley Pippins. For the Pickles Bradley McVay got things going on the bump by tossing five scoreless innings with three strikeouts and only surrendering one hit. Jack Noble followed that up with two scoreless innings of his own with three strikeouts as well. Both pitchers worked out of a scenario of runners at first and second base and nobody out in their outing as well. The Pickles were only able to scratch three hits across that came from the bat of Austin Lively, Chase Luttrell, and KC Hunt. The Pickles will be back in action tomorrow morning with a double header Saturday with game one at 1:05 and game two coming at you at 7:05

2050 Pickles Dominate on Future Night

The year was 2050 and the 23 time WCL Portland Pickles were back taking on their long time rivals the Corvallis Knights. These two teams have had many great games in the past but tonight was the Pickles night. In a game full of wacky futuristic rules, the Portland Pickles eventually won the 7 inning game by a score of 11-3. Despite Corvallis having the advantage with the power balls, the Pickles were able to turn a conventional 6-4-5 double play, with the batter having to run to third base after putting the ball in play. Daniel Naughton got the win on the mound, while the combo of Alex Lambeau and Gabe Skoro nailed down the win in the 7th. Johnathan Kelly, despite the crowd chanting for him to utilize the new bunt rule, unloaded on a ball and sent it back to 2019 to lead the Pickles on offense. The Pickles will return to the year 2019 tomorrow night as they begin a WCL series against the Yakima Valley Pippins, first pitch at 7:05

Pickles Drop Final Game of Series to the Knights

The Corvallis Knights rolled into Walker Stadium as the hottest team in the league and that stood true again in this one as they defeated the Portland Pickles 10-3. Knights scored two in the 1st inning and three in the 2nd inning and never looked back. Christian Ciuffetelli was a bright spot on the mound as he threw four scoreless innings of relief and had five strikeouts. John Jensen led the way for the offense by knocking in all three runs of the game with one swing on a home run in the bottom off the third inning. Pickles will be back in action tonight at 7:05 as them and the Knights will travel to the year 2050 for a special exhibition game.
